Upgrading to karmic

I'm thinking of upgrading my Eeepc 904HD to Ubuntu 9.10 this weekend If i have time)
I will do an upgrade from 9.04 and possibly a clean install after taking backups.

I will report here if i run into any problems.

Skype mic problem

I installed Skype from Medibuntu repository and it's working without any major tweaks, except for internal mic. I've been trying to tweak ALSA settings,, but to no avail. It's still using the external jack mic input.
I will post more on the sound issue, once i've figured it out.

Webcam seems to work ok, which was a bit of a surprise.

I downloaded and installed eee specific kernel from http://www.array.org/ubuntu/setup-intrepid.html
and at the moment i haven't noticed anything borKen. Better keep the old generic kernel just in case of disaster. This kernel fixed the acpi-buttons for volume up and down.

Installation notes for eeePC 904HD xp to Ubuntu 8.10 / xp dualboot

Ok, so i got myself this eeePC 904HD (black) with Windows XP Home preinstalled. Everything has been working fine so far. But i wanted to try and install ubuntu on it, so here are the steps as i recall to do so. The harddrive weeepc 904hd install notes henrik iivonenas already split into two partitions, so i decided to ditch the D: drive.

First i made a bootable usb-pendrive with unetbootin http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/ (Ubuntu 8.10)
Then i simply installed with the manual option in the partition section and choose the second drive to be deleted and made 1GB partition for swap and the rest for ubuntu.

Here are the steps taken after the install. This is still an ongoing project, so there will probably coming additions to this list.

1. eth0 is working out of box
2. sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
3. Wifi, ath5k driver install
sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-intrepid-generic
echo blacklist ath_pci >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
4. This doesn't support 904 yet.

5. Medibuntu

sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list

sudo aptitude install libdvdcss2 w32codecs acroread

6. Compiz config settings manager
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

7. sudo apt-get install ubuntu-restricted-extras amarok

8. Amarok radio streams codec, rough solution (i haven't found out which plugin is needed yet)
sudo apt-get install xine*

9. For Ubuntu partner maintained software uncomment follownig from /etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu intrepid partner
deb-src http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu intrepid partner

10. sudo apt-get update

11. Fix synaptic fast search

sudo update-apt-xapian-index

12. sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential

if you need to compile anything.

13. Still looking for fixes to ACPI keys, webcam and mic.
